Life and death. In Ayn Rand's Anthem, the people tend to die at an early unnatural age. Many things account for why this happens. I have three assumptions as to why. Here is an excerpt from my essay explaining why this phenomenon occurred.
In Anthem, lifestyle had a lot to do with the early deaths of the people too. The citizens in Equality 7-2521’s world had no free will, and they never got to make their own choices. From birth, every choice was made for them. They lacked individuality and uniqueness. From their dress to their habits, they were all the same. When they were of age, their jobs were chosen for them, and what they ate was cooked for them without any input by them. Everyday was the same as the previous, making life dull and not worth living. Nothing changed form day to day, and the little recreation they were given a day was also, like everything else, chosen for them. Another choice that was stripped from them was their living quarters. The Street Sweepers all lived in a large house together with dull white walls. Without independence, one could only survive so long.
