With one of the most recognizable soundtracks of all time, Grease stands the test of time as one of the world's greatest musicals. With its catchy songs, zany characters, and ties to other more current musicals, Grease is a must-see musical.
Taking place in the 1950s in a time of greasers and poodle skirts, Danny Zuko meets Sandy Ollson while on a summer vacation at the beach, and they fall in love. At the end of the summer, they are forced to part ways. At the beginning of the school year, Danny, the cool greaser, sees Sandy, but ignores her around his friends. Over the coarse of the year, they grow closer, yet each of them try to change themselves to please the other, and they have their ups and downs as other people make them jealous. Sandy befriends the Pink Ladies, while Danny leads his T-Birds. At the end of the movie, Sandy loses the good-girl look for a greaser look, and Danny first sees her with this look at the school carnival while she's smoking a cigarette. They then finally decide to be together again, and they sing the final song of the movie.
High School Music is a modern-day version of Grease in many ways. They both involve a couple who fall in love over vacation but are torn about due to other factions in their lives. While Grease is set sixty years ago, and HSM is modern day, they are alike in so many ways, which prove that teenagers go through the same obstacles as ones from previous generations.
I thought that this was a pretty good movie, although it was not my favorite. I enjoyed most of the songs and thought they were catchy. Rizzo was a funny character, but she was also annoying. My favorite part of the movie was the end when I saw the new Sandra Dee. Her new look was very nice. Over all, Grease was a very good musical and I thought it was better than HSM, possibly because it was the original.
Though the music and characters, this story will always be popular and loved for generations. There was a sequal to this musical, but it did not do well. I would recommend that anyone who hasn't seen Grease to go watch it as soon as possible for it's part of American culture.
